Re-use
grey water
Water
from baths and showers is a good source for garden irrigation,
as most shampoos and soaps are fairly mild and will be well-diluted
in our washing water. It is relatively simple to convert
the feed from your bathroom downpipe to distribute the water
to water butts - or even a serious irrigation system if
you have the time, money and know-how!
Butt
out!
Make good use of the wet stuff
that falls out of the sky (not so often at the moment, it seems) and collect it in a water butt
- or multiple water butts if you have the space! This saves
mains water, which appears to be in surprisingly short supply
these days, and makes good use of rainwater that would otherwise
just run down drainpipes into soak-aways and run-offs.
Compostable?
Don't
throw unwanted food away! If it's left on your plate, or
gone off in the fridge, could you use it as compost? Most
fruit and veg can be recycled as great food for your garden
(as can paper!) - but remember: meat and eggs can't! However
some garden birds are partial to leftover meat, so how about
leaving it out for them?
Coffee
grounds on the ground!
Before
emptying the contents of your coffee machine into the sink
or bin, think about tipping it on the compost heap. If you're
a keen gardener you might want to consider using it as a
kinder way to keep slugs away from your plants. Some coffee
shops even offer their old coffee grounds free to anyone
who asks for them.
